Direct Precision Answer
90″ × 95″ 15-inch drop on a 60″ × 80″ mattress

A queen quilt with a 15-inch drop on a 60 by 80 inch mattress finishes at 90 by 95 inches. Width is the mattress plus the drop on both sides. Length is the mattress plus the drop at the foot only.

Queen Quilt Size at Three Drops

These rows use a 60 by 80 inch mattress, the size Tempur-Pedic prints for a queen. Width adds the drop twice. Length adds it once. If your mattress is the 60 by 79.5 inch queen on Sealy’s size list, subtract half an inch from the length column. The rest of the cut tools are on the fabric calculator hub.

Drop Finished width Finished length
10″ 80″ 90″
15″ 90″ 95″
18″ 96″ 98″

Start with the Mattress, Then Add the Drop

What size is a queen quilt is two measurements, not one catalog number. The mattress is the top. The drop is how far the quilt hangs past that top. On a 60-inch width, a 15-inch drop on the left and the right is 60 + 15 + 15 = 90 inches. On an 80-inch length, one drop at the foot is 80 + 15 = 95 inches. The head stops at the headboard, so the length does not get a second drop. A pillow tuck, if you want the quilt to fold back over the pillows, is extra length you add on top of the 95. More cut math is on the fabric calculator hub.

A Queen Quilt Is Not a Lap Quilt

The adult lap size on the lap quilt chart is 50 by 60 inches. A queen mattress is already about 60 by 80 before the quilt hangs anywhere. A 50 by 60 throw will not cover that mattress. Keep the lap chart for a sofa or a wheelchair, and use this page when the quilt has to cover a bed.

Backing and a Block Grid

A 90 by 95 inch top needs 4 inches of backing past every edge, so the backing is at least 98 by 103 inches. That margin is the clamp rule on the quilt backing calculator. A 14-inch log cabin block does not divide 90 evenly: six blocks are 84 inches, so a log cabin quilt at this width needs a border, not a seventh block squeezed in. Cut the border strips with a 45mm rotary cutter.

Technical FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Precision technical clarifications verified by our textile engineering board.

What size is a queen quilt?

On a 60 by 80 inch mattress with a 15-inch drop, the quilt finishes at 90 by 95 inches. A different mattress length or a different drop changes both numbers.

What size is a queen mattress?

Tempur-Pedic lists a queen at 60 by 80 inches. Sealy lists some queens at 60 by 79.5 inches and others at 60 by 79 inches. Measure the mattress you own.

Is a lap quilt a queen quilt?

No. The adult lap size on this site is 50 by 60 inches. A queen mattress alone is already about 60 by 80 inches before any drop.

How much backing does a 90 by 95 inch queen quilt need?

Add 4 inches on every side for the clamp margin. A 90 by 95 inch top needs a backing at least 98 by 103 inches. Use the backing calculator for yardage.
