How Many Inches Is a Quarter Yard

A quarter yard is 9 inches. NIST defines a yard as exactly 36 inches, and 36 divided by 4 is 9. That is 22.9 cm, because one inch is exactly 25.4 mm.
Yard Fractions in Inches and Centimeters
Every row is a fraction of the 36-inch yard in NIST Handbook 44. Centimeters use the exact 25.4 mm inch from the same handbook. The pillowcase cuts on the pillowcase fabric chart use the 9-inch and 27-inch rows.
| Cut | Inches | Centimeters |
|---|---|---|
| 1/8 yard | 4.5″ | 11.4 cm |
| 1/4 yard | 9″ | 22.9 cm |
| 1/3 yard | 12″ | 30.5 cm |
| 1/2 yard | 18″ | 45.7 cm |
| 3/4 yard | 27″ | 68.6 cm |
| 1 yard | 36″ | 91.4 cm |
Why a Quarter Yard Is 9 Inches
How many inches is a quarter yard is a division, not a fabric estimate. NIST Handbook 44 lists 1 yard as 3 feet exactly and 0.9144 meter exactly, which is 36 inches. One quarter of 36 is 9. The 1959 yard notice, reprinted by NIST, sets 1 inch at exactly 25.4 millimeters, so 9 inches is 228.6 millimeters, or 22.9 centimeters. The same page is the unit behind every cut on the fabric calculator hub.
A Fat Quarter Is Not a Quarter Yard
A quarter-yard cut is 9 inches along the bolt and the full width of the cloth. Nebraska Extension describes a fat quarter as a half-yard cut in half again, about 18 by 21 inches, and says one half yard yields two fat quarters. Iowa State University Extension tells students that fat quarters vary and, for one pillow project, to assume 18 by 20 inches (their quilting sheet). Use the shop’s measured piece. Do not treat 18 by 22 as a rule when the label does not say it. The same ruler squares the strips on the log cabin block.

Where 9 Inches Shows Up in a Pillowcase
The standard contrast cuff on the pillowcase chart is a 9 by 42 inch cut, which is this quarter yard. The body is 27 by 42 inches, three of these quarters, or 3/4 yard. Half a yard is 18 inches, so it does not cover that 27-inch body. Square the cut with a 45mm rotary cutter and the scant seam on the measurement standards page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Precision technical clarifications verified by our textile engineering board.
How many inches is a quarter yard of fabric?
Nine inches along the bolt, by the full width of the cloth. On 44 to 45 inch quilting cotton the piece is about 9 by 42 to 44 inches after you stay off the selvage.
How many centimeters is a quarter yard?
22.9 centimeters. Nine inches times 25.4 millimeters is 228.6 millimeters.
Is a fat quarter the same as a quarter yard?
No. A quarter yard is 9 inches by the width of the fabric. Nebraska Extension describes a fat quarter as half of a half-yard cut, about 18 by 21 inches. A fat quarter is shorter across the bolt and longer along it.
How many quarter yards are in one yard?
Four. Each is 9 inches, and 4 times 9 is the 36-inch yard.
