The Quilted Story

I was looking through the media library on this blog and I was struck by the photos of quilts that were made years ago and how they evoked so many memories. Each quilt has its own story and seeing them brought me back to that moment in time. Thoughts of the maker, the maker’s helper, the recipient, the subject, how the fabric was chosen, how joyous it felt to give that quilt, and how sweet it is to tie it all together in my mind.

The concept of a quilted story has been rolling around in my head often now that I’m focusing in on fabric sketch collage. I’m able to use my photos to make a quilt and that is bringing me immeasurable joy. I have lots of photos and I mean lots of photos and I plan on taking lots more. It’s nice to select my favorites and then recreate them with fabric.

Some of the quilts have become beloved and make their triumphant returns only during the holidays and that fact alone makes them all the more loved by family members. We look forward to bringing out the Christmas quilt or the Halloween quilt.

Several of the photos brought back memories of time spent stitching away the hours with my favorite people.

Each quilt holds a story whether it’s an heirloom family treasure or a brand new creation hot off the sewing machine. Taking photos of your quilts and jotting down a few notes about it in a little notebook is ideal. Every quilt documented is a worthy goal. For some of us that will seem like a daunting task and it might never get done but just talking about your quilts out loud is enough. Pull them out of the closet, show them to family and friends, tell the stories behind the fabric and thread, and tell them often. Let the stories and the quilts be handed down from generation to generation. The quilted story is always one worth telling.

Leave me a comment sharing your favorite quilted story, I’d love to hear it.

  1. I love remembering the times and things that were going on in my life as I created the quilts. Funny how our memories work… a song, a smell and often a quilt make old times come alive!

    • That is so true, Beth! I feel fortunate that a lot of my quilt photos are all on the blog which is an easy place to go back to and reminisce.
      Thanks for reading today.
