Why I Love Fabric Collage Right Now

Collage has been around in the crafting world for a long time. There are all manner of styles and ways to do it! I think the most fun is when you can relax into it and when you are working with subject matter or materials that resonate with you.

Quilting for me is often tied to story. I love a good story! Don’t you? I also love photographs. The pictures I have taken are an extension of me and what I love and value. The people, the places, the animals, all of it holds a special place in my heart. So it’s natural that I’d want to extend that into my creative work.

In August our family had an amazing vacation in Hawaii. While I was looking through the photos on my phone, I found this cute little guy hiding in a past vacation folder.

How could I pass up working with this adorable subject? He lives at the Surfing Goat Dairy Farm in Maui and my kids loved him! I chose this photo to manipulate into a poster type sketch.

He’s even better in colors! This week I’m turning him into a fabric collage.

My work space has been my large ironing board and everyday I collage a different area…

I’m looking forward to finishing this one so can I move on to another photo! I have several in mind which is why I like to keep these projects on the small side. I have a lot of stories to tell through my work and I want to have time to tell them all!

Another project I’m working on is making a jelly roll slice rug using a fun jelly roll that I bought in Hawaii. I completed this one over the summer with muted colors…

And now I’m ready for big color!

What stories do you have to tell through quilting? Have you ever thought about your quilts in that context? I think it’s fun to link quilts to the events and people in our lives.

Enjoy the day!

  1. You have given me some food for thought … with the photo and collaging!!! I have millions of photos!!! I love those Hawaiian fabrics, not sure I could have cut them into strips for the floor though!!!

    • Hi Beth, I first felt funny about using the strips for the slice rug but then I thought I could always order more online! Glad you are thinking about collage…so fun!!! And revisiting the memories brings a lot of joy. Have a great day!
