Workin’ On It Wednesday

How can it be Wednesday again? I don’t know but that’s what the calendar is telling me so here goes…

This week I worked on a few different projects but in small doses. I finished another under wraps project which makes 10 out of 12. I have two more to go before I send them off into the unknown publishing world with a wish and a prayer!

I pulled out my Sashiko project and got started on it.

I also bought a beautiful new sewing basket to keep the project clean and handy. I have always wanted a sewing basket and had a Joann gift card so I purchased this cutie. Previously my Sashiko was kept in a manilla envelope 🙁

Leah and I made 3 more Comfort Bears. I think we are set now for awhile.

I printed this photo which Amanda took in the fall and I have plans to do an 8×10 art quilt with it using the Angelina Fibers that I purchased last week. They haven’t arrived yet but it my mind, I have great plans for them. I hope I can make pull it off!

Angelina Fibers are fusible, light reactive fibers that will make that butterfly shimmer if done correctly. That’s right, I said, “if”!

Greg has been wanting to replace our old projection tv in the basement for years. Since our kids never broke it, he hasn’t had an excuse to upgrade to a flat screen. He has been working killer hours and so deserved a new tv to enjoy so he finally did it! He bought a 60″ flat screen and it was to be delivered yesterday but when it arrived, the box looked like a fork lift had gone through it. I had to refuse delivery but another one will arrive tomorrow morning. That being said, I also caught the flat screen fever and ran out to get this for craft room…

Definitely not 60″ but a nice 22″.

This afternoon, I got the borders put on the music school quilt, the panel cut outs fused onto it and the backing and batting cut. Next time I work on this, I’ll baste it. After that it will just need blanket stitching around the the panels, a background stipple and some type of quilting in the borders then binding.

My big deal this week was going to a paperless calendar. I have a lovely agenda book that I use to schedule all the household activities but I rarely remember to bring it with me to the ortho or dentist or hair salon, etc. Kinda stinks when you go to schedule the next appointment and you don’t know what date will work out. So I spent a day entering all my written dates into the calendar on my ipad which instantly syncs with my iphone so I’ll never be without my calendar!!!! Yay and hooray!

I also updated my Podbean account to an unmetered bandwidth plan so that as my podcast audience grows, I don’t have to worry about my account being blocked due to limited bandwidth. Another yahoo! So now my account goes from $30 annually to $99…a big jump. Do you know what that means? It means I should podcast more often and get my money’s worth out of it! Speaking of which, have you sent me your quilt story yet? The podcast question this time around is “what is your quilt story?”…meaning why do you quilt? What draws you to it? Please respond even if you are a new quilter. I’d love to hear your story and share it.

Last item as I have to go make dinner now…tortellini soup…yum…ok…I saw this posted by a fellow guild member. It was an article in the Boston Globe. I will cut and paste and hope she doesn’t mind my doing so. What do you think of this? It was in the Ask Amy column.

Q. My 27-year-old son and his wife are expecting our first grandchild this summer. I am over the moon. As a gift for the baby, I made a beautiful, meaningful patchwork quilt.

Not only did I not receive a “thanks” or “I like it,” but I was told that I would need to run any further gifts past them to make sure they would need it. My son went on to say that they do not have a lot of extra space to store blankets.

This quilt was made with only one thing in mind — showing my grandchild how much I care. How should I handle my feelings of rejection and disappointment? Do I continue to send gifts with the hope that they meet parental approval?

Or should I send gifts of cash, which I am loath to do.

A. I can understand how disappointed you must feel, but you have spun this disappointment into a massive dilemma about gift giving. You might be someone who wraps your considerable positive and powerful feelings into quilts, gifts, and other material things. This abundance of kindness can create unintended pressure for a couple who haven’t even become parents yet.

You should determine to give this new baby the most important thing of all — an easy and loving relationship with you. Nothing further is required.

I’m dying to know what you all think…I know what I think of that and it isn’t very nice! LOL!!!

Dinner making calls…

  1. I love your sashiko, Sandi, the stitches look beautiful! About the story you pasted… They don’t deserve any presents if they want to STORE a BLANKET! that was meant to be used. I wouldn’t give them money either, but open an account after the baby is born and put money in there without the parents knowing. Screw them…

  2. Your response to the grama was very kind. She should keep all gifts for her grandchild at her house and not give the parents anything for the child. If she wants to give money, she can set up a 529 plan in the child’s name. The parents are ungrateful wretches.

  3. Love the sashiko!

As for the Ask Amy column, I’ll just have to show it to my kids as a cautionary tale. “Here’s what’ll happen if you ever do THAT to me.”

  4. Oh my goodness – I would take that quilt back and save it for someone who will appreciate it. And son and DIL would NEVER get a gift from me again – wouldn’t want to take up too much room in their lovely home, would I? I would buy gifts for the baby though. And, teach him/her how to quilt in a few years!
