Card Tricks and WaterFire

Happy Columbus Day to those in the USA and Happy Thanksgiving to those in Canada! I hope you are enjoying your turkey dinners…or do you have something else to eat in celebration? Maybe someone in Canada can let me know…hint, hint Colleen!

The weekend has been a nice one filled with movies (Hotel Transylvania), shopping and visiting with friends. I also worked on the dreaded card trick quilt! I think I have half the blocks completed and a while ago, I lost the inclination to work on it. The blocks take close to an hour to piece which makes for slow going. I like to move faster than that hence the “giving up”. However….on Saturday morning I had an inexplicable urge to piece something. I’m sure that’s because I’ve been working on fusible projects a lot over the last few weeks. So I pieced one of the blocks and here she is…

The colors for the card trick quilt were inspired by a skein of yarn I am using to make a scarf. I wanted something subtle but this may be tooooooo subtle! It does look pretty in rows so hopefully it will turn out well.

Saturday we met up with friends we haven’t seen in years. My husband attended Bentley University (which was Bentley College in his day) and these are long time friends of his and mine from the college days. I met them through Greg, while I was in still in college (UMASS Amherst) and they had all just entered the working world! The friendships have remained and it was so fun to see them all, especially their kids! We spent the day eating and chatting and then headed into Providence, RI for the WaterFire. WaterFire is a celebration that happens throughout the summer in downtown Providence where they light actual wood bonfires along the river that flows through the downtown area. You can take a gondola ride through it and there is music and food. Thousands line up along the river edge to see the fires lit and enjoy the warmth of it – especially in October! It was fun and we all enjoyed ourselves! I’ve been to Providence a few times and I really like the atmosphere. It has a nicer vibe than downtown Boston. Now I need to find more reasons to go there! LOL!

Here are pictures from WaterFire – taken on iphone and not great…sorry…the first is of the water basin where several fires were lit.

This one is a look down the river…

So today I am having a long awaited polymer clay craft day with Leah! I’m off to get ready for that. Have a wonderful holiday!!

  1. Your Card Trick is impressive. Persistance pays off! I have never done one in 25 years of quilting my sister wants me to show her how. We’ll learn together. Your color work well together. Thank you for posting those Waterfire photos, very nice. Diane

    • Thank you Diane! I often think maybe some bright batiks would have been the way to go on the card trick but at the time, I was drawn to the softer colors.

In regard to showing your sister how to make a card trick block, it’s not difficult just time consuming. I think a card trick pillow with four blocks would be a great project to begin with.

I think in my case, maybe I shouldn’t make it block by block either. Some faster chain piecing of partial block units would be faster!

      Have a great day!

  2. Yes, we stuff ourselves with turkey for Thanksgiving. I’m not sure why we do it a month earlier than the US. It’s probably because by the end of November, we have long forgotten harvest, as winter has started in earnest.

I like the colours in your card trick block. I don’t think they will be too subtle. With the white background, I think it will be very pretty.

    • Hi Alex!
Thank you for the comment. You should definitely go to WaterFire sometime. It’s very fun! There’s also a huge mall there called Providence Place if you like to shop 😉
