Welcome To My Day On The 100 Blocks Blog Tour!!!

Welcome to old friends and new for my day on the 100 Blocks Volume 10 Blog Tour! I hope you are all having a wonderful time jumping from blog to blog reading about everyone’s block designs.

My block choice this time around was an easy one. A few years ago I put up a Hummingbird feeder that suctions to my living room window…ever since that day, this has been the view out of the window. The Hummingbirds love this feeder and they visit several times throughout the day.

Once in awhile we’ll get a bird or two with distinct markings and we know that those birds are repeat visitors! This has been such a fun experience for my family and so I decided to design a block around the Hummingbird theme. My block is Hummingbird Haven.

blog5

The way I made the block was to first enlarge a good photo and print it out on regular paper. I made two copies. One for cutting up into templates and the other as a placement guide.

blog8

I cut out templates for each design element and then used to Heat N Bond Lite to create the fusible appliques. I am a huge fan of fusible applique and most of the patterns I design are fusible.

blog7

I cut out my fusible backed appliques and ironed them to the background.

blog6

I’m also a huge fan of blanket stitching the edges of my fusible appliques as I did here…

I added some French Knots for the eyes of the Hummingbirds and also some metallic silver ribbon that I had on hand for the feeder to hang by.

Now that you’ve seen my block and have a feel for the design of it, how about a give away? QuiltMaker will give one lucky reader a copy of 100 Blocks Vol. 10 and I will also give a second reader a copy as well! Here’s how to enter for chance to win. 1. I love your block. My dad was faithful at keeping a hummingbird feeder, and the birds would come to the window to find him when they thought it was getting low. They’d go to whichever room he was in and hover, looking right at him, until he got up and tended to their needs. Now I keep a feeder and the birds wait by the back door and then follow me around the house when I’m refilling it. It makes me happy every time. I will surely be making your block.

  2. How awesome is that to see hummingbirds out your window. We tried one of those feeders but it didn’t work us. When we planted bee balm in our yard, they came. We did have a pair of cardinals that came every year. I love your block! Thanks for a chance to win a copy of the magazine.

  3. Oh, this is an awesome block! I usually have a feeder out for the humers when they’re passing through in the Fall or Spring. They are amazing and gorgeous! Some have gotten so brave as to sit on the feeder mere inches from our head!

  4. A very cute block. Thanks for showing us the steps to make it. Can’t wait until winter is over and the hummingbirds are back here. SO fun to watch.

  5. Just loved the story for the inspiration for your block! And it’s a beautiful block – can’t wait to get my hands on a copy so I can get started on making one. Thanks for the inspiration!

  6. I love your hummingbird block. I remember going to my Aunt’s house in AZ and sitting in her backyard watching the hummingbirds at the many feeders she has. Thanks!

  7. My mom always has a feeder near her porch-she has every kind of native bird visit her backyard. This year a turkey even became a wild “pet” it followed her whenever she was outside!

  8. It is so special to watch these tiny birds dart in for a sip of something sweet. Thank you for making such a lovely block and for the opportunity to win a magazine.

  9. I love our hummingbird feeders too!! I’ll happily sit on the back porch and watch them dive bomb each other, chasing through the trees…needing to defend their feeding station!! Love your block – thanks for making it fusible, the only applique I’ll do!!!

  10. Aren’t you lucky to have hummingbirds visit so close to your window. What a beautiful image. I love your block and seeing your process in designing it. Thanks.

  11. Oh boy.. I like hummingbirds. I feed them off my patio to and keep watch over them as they buzz thru the yard. I would love to do your block. You have good work as I went to your website and roamed around. Also Liked you on Facebook!! Thanks.

  12. Your beautiful block reminds me, fondly, of my ex-husband’s late step-father. He absolutely loved hummingbirds. He had at least 2 feeders and would watch the birds for hours on end. Before I start crying I’ll post my comment and move on to the next blogger.

  13. Your block is definitely one of my favorites from this hop. I will have to visit your store for more of your patterns. Thanks for sharing your process and for the chance to win a copy of the magazine.

  14. My neighbor had a hummingbird feeder. He said they got territorial over their feeder, and also chittered angrily at him when he was late in refilling it. They also love flowering Honey Locust trees!

  15. What a great block — I may have to try to make one for my sister, who is already missing her hummingbirds (it’s already too, too cold for them).

  16. We don’t have hummingbirds in New Zealand. They are amazing little birds and I love seeing them on videos. It must be fin having them in the garden feeding lynnmcindoe at gmail.com

  17. Oh, I do love hummingbirds. I love they way the dart around and whiz past your ear. Thanks for sharing your block, the design process and for offering a giveaway.

  18. I have only done applique once, and that was way back when I had absolutely no idea of what I was doing. (I was in my teens in the late 60’s.) I only wish that I could have see someone else’s process then as you have shown on your blog. Would have been a huge help. And I really love hummingbirds! Who doesn’t?
