Crayon Embroidery, A Finish, A Storm

Happy Monday! I missed my blog post last week and maybe even the week before. Not sure how I got so off track. During that time we had school vacation and I celebrated my 47th birthday. I also attended my guild’s Winter Free Workshop which was a lot of fun. Now I’m sitting here writing to you with the help of a generator as we’ve had no electricity since Friday. A huge storm hit us and really did a number on our little town. The crews are out on the road near our house so fingers crossed the lights will come on soon.

We had some of this to contend with as well…water coming through the bricks on the chimney and down to the ash boxes spilling out into the basement. This is an issue for us whenever there is a big nor’easter type storm. We’re lucky it’s not gobs of water. A shop vac is enough to clean it up. In the past we’ve had our chimney waterproofed and it might be time to do it again!

Before the power was lost on Friday, I did finish up the silent auction quilt for Amanda’s sorority. This was a jelly roll by Moda called Summer Breeze. I love the blue and yellow so much!

This is the back of it. The pantograph is called lilac and it works up nicely.

Last Saturday, my mom and I went to our guild’s Winter Free Workshop where members teach other members new techniques in half or full day workshops. My mother and I both signed up for crayon embroidery and we had a great time! The project was from Crab Apple Hill Studios website and we learned how to color an embroidery project, heat set, and then embroider the project. This is the start of mine. I haven’t gotten too much done on it since as I am working on my bunny embroidery first. I always wanted to know how to do this as the ones I’ve seen are so beautiful.

I’m also working on the Christmas tree skirt which is a latch hook project. For my birthday, my mother gave me this awesome table for hooking rugs. I just love it. It makes the whole project so much easier. The little bins for yarn are so convenient. I like watching tv while I work on it.

It was ordered from the Mary Maxim catalog.

Lindsey made a big decision last week! She has decided she will attend the University of Vermont! Oh boy, we’re going to be road tripping up north quite a bit between visiting Lindsey and also Amanda at the University of New Hampshire! We’re super proud of Lindsey for blazing her own trail and choosing a school that’s a bit farther away than her true comfort zone. It’s four hours from us. I know she’ll love it there. It’s a beautiful place.

Summer Wrap Up

How can it be summer has come and gone????? I’m pretty sure this was the fastest one on the books. We wrapped up around here with a flurry of activity in the last few weeks that included a super fun family vacation to Canada and Vermont. We spent 4 nights in Mont Tremblant, 2 nights in Quebec City and 1 night in Burlington, VT. We made lots of memories and we tried real hard not to think about the fact that Amanda would be moving into UNH a few short days from then. I have some beautiful pictures to share in a future post about our vacation.

And move in, she did. The first bird has left the nest. Can you hear me crying? We did a lot of crying that day. A lot. My mama heart was broken seeing Amanda so nervous and scared. For a year or more she’s talked non-stop about attending UNH and living in the dorm with her cousin and another roommate. It all got the best of her come move in day. Thankfully, with each passing day and phone call, she has sounded happier and happier. Change is hard, friends. Here she is working on her desk set up.

Lindsey turned Sweet 16 and that meant a trip to the registry for a driver’s permit!

And Leah continues to wow us with her talent for pointe technique which is part of classical ballet. Check out that foot on the ground!

So now that everyone is about to get busy with school work, I can get busy with quilting and scrapbooking. I worked a bit on the Seaglass quilt this week. The rows are joined and now I need to add the borders.

I also started laying out charm squares for another baby quilt. I’m vending a craft fair on September 24th and I need to get busy on some items for the table in addition to quilt patterns and scrapbooking supplies. My table will be split between Creative Memories and Quilt Cabana Patterns.

The long arm progress has been stalled due to vacation and life in general but that shall pick right up again! What have you all been working on?

I started this quilt last April while Amanda was on a school trip to Paris. I knew I’d be anxious every day that she was abroad and I wanted something sweet and fun to work on while she was in France. I used the Love Notes pattern from Missouri Star Quilt Company and Kiss Kiss fabric by Moda. I loved that it had adorable Eiffel Towers printed all over it. So sweet. I managed to make the quilt top while she was away but didn’t get to the actual quilting until this year. On Sunday I stayed in my jammies until it was done!

My next project for Amanda is this cute and quirky chicken wall hanging. My girl loves her chickens!

I’m thinking April vacation will be a good time to start this one. I’m back to work on Seaglass this week.

We had a rainy day at UNH on Saturday for Accepted Students Day but that didn’t stop us from having a good time! It’s considered good luck to rub the wildcat’s nose but Amanda would not do it on previous trips for fear of jinxing herself from being admitted.

So finally now that she is accepted and is going to attend UNH, she rubbed the wildcat’s nose.
