This past weekend I had an adventure in NYC with Leah and Lindsey and the Michelle’s Dance Studio Dance Company. It was a whirlwind, super fun trip. These type of trips with a bus ride and planned events stresses me out like crazy so I’m considering it a huge victory on my part that I was able to go and enjoy myself. We had an absolute blast there. We left at 8am on Friday. The 4 hour bus ride turned out to be a 6 hour bus ride both ways but I had a good book and my Sashiko with me so it was fine.

Friday afternoon we discovered Times Square and the M&M Store and Toys R Us. Friday night we had dinner at Bubba Gump’s restaurant and then we went to see Matilda at the Shubert Theater. Saturday morning the dance company attended a dance workshop with a Matilda performer. Saturday afternoon we back to Times Square to go to the Hershey Store and the 3 story Forever 21 store. Saturday night we had dinner in Little Italy and then we walked to the Empire State Building and Macy’s store. Sunday we toured Radio City Music Hall and we were allowed on the stage and we met a Rockette. After that we had a few hours for last minute shopping and then we headed home. Here are a few pictures.

WIP, Good News & A Flange!

Happy Wednesday!!!

Let’s start with good news…my podcast, Quilt Cabana Corner, is coming back! During the summer I had made the decision to stop podcasting due to the expense of it and the time commitment. Yesterday I was able to get a better pricing plan for the podcast and I’ve missed talking to you all so I renewed my account and there will be a new episode next week! You can find the podcast through Podbean and also through iTunes.

My WIP have been varied this week. I have spent more time at the computer than the sewing machine but I did finish up the Advent wall hanging that is going to the church for the fair raffle. I love how it came out especially the flange that my mother suggested and prepared for it. First though, here is the finished quilt…

advent 3

It will be displayed at the fair with a candy cane in each pocket. I love how it came out. See the little red ridge in between the border and the binding? That is a flange. Here’s a little tutorial.

The flange is a 1″ piece of fabric that is folded and pressed in half. You make enough for all four sides of your quilt.

photo 3 (11)

Line up the raw edge of the flange with the raw edge of the borders. I did the sides first followed by the top and bottom. You are not mitering the corners of this flange just simply stitching it on with a very scant 1/4″ seam. You don’t want the stitching to show when you add the binding and fold it over.

photo 4 (5)

When you have attached the flange to all four sides of the quilt, it looks like this…

photo 5 (2)

Then you add the binding in your normal way. Here’s a close up of it on the quilt…

advent 2

I think it add a beautiful touch to the edges of a project.

Other things I worked on this week include the hourglass blocks. I have all the blocks made and am in the process of trimming dog ears and trimming each block to 9″. I will lay them out tomorrow morning and post a picture then.

I made some steps forward in terms of setting myself up to vend at local quilt shows. I signed up for PayPay Here so that I can accept credit and debit and I also visited the New England Quilt Supply Company which is about 15 minutes from my house. I took a tour of it and I was completely overwhelmed with how much stuff they have…floor to ceiling fabrics, notions, books, everything…three floors worth of it too!! I opened an account there so that I can purchase items to sell alongside my patterns. It’s shaping up to be a very busy time here at Quilt Cabana Patterns and I’m loving every minute of it! I am also working on putting together a trunk show and lecture to present at area quilt guilds so if you’re local to me (MA) and would like me to come visit your guild, get in touch!

I can barely catch my breath here this morning. I am in the midst of packing for a trip to NYC with my girls and the dance studio. We are seeing Matilda on Broadway, touring Radio City Music Hall, the girls will have a workshop with a Broadway performer and we’ll eat and shop. I can’t wait! The last time I was in NYC was in the early 90’s with my sister for a tour that her work put together. That was a long time ago.

Have a wonderful day!

Fall Bed Runner in Quilter’s World Is Out & News

photo (3)

I’m very excited to see that my Fall Jubilee Bed Runner is in the Autumn issue of Quilter’s World! I was thrilled when it arrived home yesterday as I’m really looking forward to using this on my bed come the fall. It’s a beautiful runner in batiks and would also look good in any fall or winter combination of fabrics! I hope you’ll pick up the magazine and give it a try.

I must be on a roll as I also found out this week that my block will be included in QuiltMaker’s 100 Blocks Vol. 10 issue! I love being part of that publication and being on the blog tour which also means a giveaway for two copies of the magazine. Stay tuned for that!

My next bit of news relates to the podcast. After many years and several episodes, I have decided to give the podcast up. I have loved recording Quilt Cabana Corner but frequently I feel I hold information back on the blog to “save” for the podcast and then the podcast rolls around and the news is kind of old. It’s hard to keep up with a podcast, blog and social media and to keep the content interesting. I’d like to concentrate more on the blog at this time. I’ll most likely do one more episode to wrap it up in the next few weeks. In the meanwhile, if you have something you’d like me to talk about on the blog, please let me know.

We have one more postcard swap left on the calendar for the year. The postcard swaps have been happening since the holiday one last December. The first day of fall is September 23rd and that just feels a little to soon for me. How about if we plan for one where the postcard arrives in time for Halloween? That gives everyone a bit more breathing room for the end of summer plans we all might have! I will do a more detailed post in the next few days and start the sign up.

That’s all my news for today. I’m hoping to take my blueberry girl, Lindsey, over to the blueberry farm to pick even though, she has two blueberry bushes here at the house. The girl LOVES blueberries.

Have a beautiful day!
