Love Notes and Applique Wannabe

I find myself obsessing lately about applique methods. I haven’t done much traditional applique as I’ve been a huge fan of fusible applique since I began quilting in 2004. Thanks to quilt stars like Karen Kay Buckley and Jill Finley, I am now obsessed with learning how to do it correctly and efficiently. I purchased some supplies, of course. I bought freezer paper, a tailor’s awl, Roxanne’s Baste It Glue, thimble dots, and starch.

I decided to follow Jill Finley’s applique method with stacking four pieces of freezer paper together to make the pattern templates. That seemed to work out ok except that I got the templates too wet with starch when I was brushing the starch on the seam allowance. I dried it out with the iron but I think the templates still bent a bit. I thought it would be good to have an applique project with me tomorrow at Leah’s dance recital. I’ll be backstage for hours and having a hand project sounded good. The other 28,000 hand projects I have started ¬†would also have been good. None the less, I made an ice cream cone pattern on EQ7 and prepared the pieces for applique.

I wish I had made the pieces larger but this will have to do.

All the pieces are glue basted to the background and ready for stitching.

This week I got the white borders on Lindsey’s Love Notes quilt. Today I got one outer border on as well.

Next week I’m going to be marking this for the long arm. I just purchased a six pack of blue washout pens. I’ll be ready to mark it up in Judi Madsen fashion and do some custom quilting in all that negative space.

But tomorrow is Leah’s dance recital and that is what I’ll be focused on. I had posted lots of pictures from dress rehearsal on Instagram and Facebook but here are my favorites. This is the debut of Leah’s pointe class on stage. They are dancing to Phantom Of The Opera and it’s really amazing.

What are you all working on this week? I’d love to hear about it. I’ll be posting a podcast episode hopefully the week after next so stay tuned for that. Feel free to ask me questions and I’ll answer them on the podcast.

A Week To Top All Weeks

So, I haven’t been quilting this week…it’s been a whirlwind of activity between Amanda graduating from high school on Sunday, Lindsey having awards night tomorrow and Leah having a dance recital this Saturday!

Sunday was such a mixed bag of emotions. We are so very proud of Amanda and even though it rained, the indoor ceremony was heartfelt and beautiful. I tried not to tear up but it was impossible. We were thrilled that she ended up in the front row, center. It made for great photos!

Here we all are before leaving the house. I think the most stressful part of the day was trying to figure out what time to leave the house so were sure to get a seat in the auditorium! Families were limited to four tickets for the auditorium and then anyone else we brought could watch on the monitors in the gym.

My beautiful niece graduated on Sunday also from a different town and we were all able to meet up for a celebratory dinner after the ceremonies were complete for both girls. These two are headed to University of New Hampshire as roommates!

I woke up on Monday morning half startled that I was back to reality and in a big way with a dance dress rehearsal that afternoon and night. We aren’t allowed to take photos on the day of the recital so all the ‘dance moms’ have to get it out of our system during rehearsal!! Here are few highlights of Leah’s numbers.

She’s also in a large production number and ballet with her dance company.
Saturday will be exciting for sure! 3 shows all in one day.

Awards night for Lindsey is tomorrow night. These are academic awards and she has worked herself hard this year and is very excited for it.

Around Thursday of last week the stress was getting the best of me and in addition to eating poorly (read Big Mac and ice cream), I was feeling quite deserving of some sort of reward for getting one child to the finish line of high school! LOL!! Normally that means a new quilting notion but this time I went for a new laptop. I wanted to get something very light weight that I could stick in my bag easily for writing. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on it and so I purchased this Chromebook from Acer…and I LOVE IT! A Chromebook does not run on a Windows platform and allows you to use Google Docs instead and saves to the cloud as you type. It’s perfect for surfing the internet, watching Netflix, writing blog posts and articles. There is no disk drive but it does have USB ports and a card reader. I love that it is super thin and weighs very little. I took it to the dress rehearsal and caught up on emails and Creative Memories work stuff. The screen is anti-glare which will be nice for the pool area. At $159.99, it’s perfect! I noticed Amazon has dropped the price by $20 from when I first looked at it. I ended up getting this same one at Target because I was impatient and wanted it, you know, NOW.

When I can return to my quilting, I’ll be continuing work on the Seaglass quilt as well as the hibiscus art quilt.

Have a great afternoon!

A Finish & Good News

Happy Wednesday! Hope you are all making some decent progress on your projects this week. I’m thrilled to have finished up the t-shirt quilt I was working on for my friend’s daughter. She had a combination of 23 t-shirts, sweatshirts and tank tops. We used the fronts, some backs, and even a sleeve! It was quite a project and took many hours of planning and prepping. I sashed it in a printed black cotton fabric and backed it with fleece. The quilt is heavy as all get go but is durable and warm!

When I wasn’t working on the t-shirt quilt last week, we were getting ready for the dance recitals. Both Lindsey and Leah were in all three shows that day. It was Lindsey’s 6th and final recital and Leah’s 10th recital! Leah has been dying to get her hands on a 10 year trophy since the day she received her 5 year trophy! Lindsey had a long day as she still is feeling affects of her concussion. She wanted to be able to wrap up her dance career though and she did just that. Greg and I are so proud of both of them.

This week we are moving on to the music recital where Amanda and Lindsey will both be performing. I’m hoping the raffle quilt I made will take in some good ticket sales.

I received some great news from the lovely people over at Quilter’s World that one of my projects will be included in the Spring 2016 issue! I love working with them and I’ll be busy now for a few weeks completing the project. It’s due the day we leave for Hawaii in August so I’ll be working on that sooner rather than later!

I had an idea to research some Block Of The Month programs and to possibly design my own. I’m wondering if there would be interest in that? I’ve always wanted to organize one but haven’t had the time. I’ll keep you posted if I move ahead with that.

I think that’s it for today! Have a good one.
