Progress & A Birthday

I made some progress today on The Lindsey Project art quilt. I finished the sky this afternoon and I’m thrilled with how it came out.

I cropped the photo here to see how it will look when it’s squared up.

So, I still have to work on her face as you can see it’s just penciled in at the moment. However, I’ll save that for last and instead work on the ground that she is standing on. In the photo, it is sort of a stamped cement that she stands on but I’ll make it more “painterly” and use these fabrics in the same way I have done the rest of the piece.

I think it will add some interesting color to the quilt having a nice range of browns in there.

Yesterday was Leah’s 12th birthday. We had a wonderful time at Southwick’s Zoo in Mendon, MA. The highlight of the day was the deer path where you wander around feeding lots of deer. Most of the deer are very friendly and eager to eat out of your hand. A few of the deer are skittish and would rather eat the corn kernels that are dropped on the ground.

The last time we went to this zoo was for Lindsey’s birthday awhile ago and Leah was little and very afraid and I had to carry her on my hip the whole way through. This year, Leah loved it and fed them happily. It was a lot of fun. After the zoo we had dinner at Leah’s favorite restaurant, Bugaboo Creek. We headed home after that for birthday cake and ice cream.

It goes without saying that I have no idea how Leah can possibly be 12 years old? She is my “baby” after all…sigh. I told Greg that when Leah turns 14, I’m going to buy myself something really nice for having survived three 13 year old girls!!!! LOL!! Something fabric’y or sparkly, perhaps?

Have a great weekend, everyone.

  1. Happy birthday, Leah! And yes, when she’s 14 you should definitely celebrate! I was just telling my 21-year-old daughter this afternoon how much I enjoyed both of my kids– “At least, once you weren’t 13 anymore.” ๐Ÿ™‚ And I LOVE LOVE LOVE what you’re doing with the Lindsay Project. You made me start watching the WBB Pictorial Quilt class again, though I think that’s a different technique. Still n’ all, def something I’m going to play with soon! It’s beautiful–you’re doing a great job!

    • Thanks Sandy! The WBB is a different technique but it’s the technique I used for the quilt of Amanda in the grass. Her technique is very well thought out and a lot of steps that I didn’t necessarily follow but I was inspired all the same!! This particular quilt of Lindsey is really Susan Carlson’s technique. I am loving it.

I do enjoy my kids now but I’m sure it will be a smidge easier in some ways when the last has past the 13 year old mark!! LOL.

  2. I agree with Sandy, the Lindsey project looks awesome! I love what you did with the sky, it’s coming together really nicely! I had to read it twice when you were talking about the zoo, because I just couldn’t believe your youngest one is 12! I always mix Lindsey and Leah up, but now I know Leah is the youngest ๐Ÿ™‚ And I exactly know what you mean about 13 yo girls! You deserve something REALLY shiny! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Thanks Kati!! We had a great birthday celebration for Leah. The zoo was a lot of fun. I think shiny will be the way to go when I celebrate the last of 13! LOL!!!
Thanks for the comment about the quilt. I am enjoying this process very much.

  3. sounds like a lovely celebration. I might have to copy your idea but since its been a while (5 years) since my youngest turned 14 I might have to celebrate next January when my youngest turns 20. Having survived 4 teenagers must warrant a celebration. I might do up the family toilet then too. 3 teenaged boys using it has made it a bit smelly at times. I wonder if they aren’t so stinky when they are no longer teenagers?
Something sparkley or sewing related might be called for in January… what a good idea

    • That absolutely warrants a celebration of something sparkly and a new bathroom!!!! Congratulations again on your anniversary. I’ve enjoyed reading about how you met your man!
