Workin’ On It Wednesday

How the heck is it Wednesday again????? I swear May just started and now it is almost over…which means June is coming…which means my quilting time will be dwindling…but it also means vacation and sleeping in…that’s all good.

The holiday weekend was fun but fast and not particularly relaxing. We seemed to have something going on at just about every moment and by the time Tuesday came around, I realized I never grocery shopped or ran laundry, etc. So round and round I went but I did have time to fit in a fun dyeing experiment in. Sandy of Quilting For The Rest of Us and myself both subscribe to Quilting Arts magazine. This month they were featuring some fun dyeing techniques. One of those techniques is called Confetti Dyeing. Basically, it is using a metal strainer to tap dry dye powder over damp fabric. The result is a confetti type sprinkling of color. Sandy and I thought it would be fun to both do it and then share results. Here is how mine came out. I’m not sure if Sandy posted her results yet, I’ll have to check on that.

I wasn’t wild about the result only because I had no idea when I would ever use this piece of fabric other than to cut it up for a landscape. A few Twitter peeps made some great suggestions though such as using it for a pillow, a child’s bag, a backdrop for a silhouette quilt where a family is watching fireworks, etc. Someday a project will be crying out for this piece and I will have it 😉

I worked on the apple core English paper piecing…not enough for a photo though.

I worked on the pink/gray/black & white project and now I’m in the process of binding it.

This quilt is 44″ x 44″ which is larger than I like to work with on my machine in terms of free motion quilting. I hate the awkwardness but until I win the lottery and get a mid-arm or long-arm machine, I am going to have to deal with it. I don’t like to put my machine on a regular table to free motion because the machine sits up too high. I decided to just put up the card table the kids had when they were young behind my Sew Ezi table and then pull a Rubbermaid tote around the side of it.

The table and tote were too short so I had to round up plastic cups that were all the same size to raise the height a bit. This did work and I will do it again. I did see these tables in the Nancy catalog though and wondered about how useful they could be?

I think they are kind of narrow though. For now, I’ll stick with my crazy set up.

I also got my Project Life album caught up through the end of April.

As far as the running goes, I am on week 5 of Couch To 5K. So far I’ve been going by time not distance. In a week or so I’ll track my distance and see how close I am getting to that 5K mark. Yesterday’s run consisted of two 5 minute runs and a 6 minute run with walking in between. Tomorrow’s run is two 5 minute runs and an 8 minute run.

Things I haven’t gotten to yet are finishing the butterfly quilt, trying out my new rubbing plates and Shiva Paintstiks and working on some unfinished quilts that need borders and quilting. I also desperately need to find a gardening groove. I have no desire to get out there…probably because the weather is fluctuating between 50’s and 90’s! That’s New England for you. Friday will be 94 degrees out which is a bummer for the school band which is traveling to a festival and then going to an amusement park afterwards. Hubs is chaperoning that because it is so absolutely not my cup of tea. Teens running around an amusement park and my levels of anxiety totally would not work out well. Give me the classroom project or the phone call list and I’m good to go. LOL.

Back to binding…what are you all working on?

  1. Have listened for awhile, but not a big commenter… Anyway on your Viking, it may be just ever so slightly out of time. I have a Viking 150E from 1989, which I use all the time. I had a similar problem with it several years ago, and when the timing is only slightly off, the only place you might notice would be while doing a wide satin stitch our something like thread painting.

Anyway, I love your podcast, and you are one of the podcasters who have inspired me to start sewing and quilting again. I’m making a pieced denim Gypsy skirt right now.

    Thanks and happy stitches!

    • Thanks Francine! The next time I take my Viking in for service, I will have them check on the timing issue.
I’m so glad you are inspired to quilt now! Would love to see pics of your finished project.
Thanks for taking time to comment.
