Monday’s Ramble

Written By: Sandra Colwell - Feb• 04•13

Here we are back to Monday once again! The weekend was nice around here. We had a quiet one which is fine by me. Last night Greg and two of the girls went to the Superbowl party across the street. Lindsey and I stayed home and watched a movie. She was congested and her mouth hurts due to spacers on her teeth. She is having her braces put on Wednesday morning and the spacers are helping to make room around the molars for metal bands. She was happy to be on the couch and I had a migraine so I was too!

So last week, I was reading my fellow guild member’s blog and she posted about her love of the ukulele. Linda wrote about how her granddaughter plays and now she is giving her other granddaughter a ukulele as well. Linda made it sound like so much fun and offered up a few online resources and that along with an upcoming trip to Hawaii all lead to this…

Yep, for real. This is how I do things. It leaves Greg’s head shaking. It leaves my mother laughing (though she usually follows suit on things I do/buy in about 3 week’s time but I’m thinking not on this one). I OBSESSED about purchasing a uke (notice how I shorten the word as if I’ve been playing for a really long time LOL!), I researched and researched and researched compulsively. I don’t think a ukulele website was left unturned. I learned the types and the price ranges as if my life depended on it. Crazy, I know, but it’s how I do things. So here I am in my uke glory!

Since bringing this baby home on Friday afternoon, I have learned 5 chords and how to tune it. I have ordered new, better strings for it and a copy of Ukulele For Dummies. No idea how to restring one but how hard can it be? Right?

The kids have jumped on the bandwagon which is fantastic as they know so much more about music than I do. We are taking turns strumming the ukulele and sharing the chord knowledge. I think it could be a good thing. We needed another instrument in the house to go along with the piano, sax, flute, clarinet and drums that currently reside here. The more the merrier!

Check out Linda’s beautiful blog here.

And how about this?

This is Amanda’s new favorite concoction! A Hoodsie Cup between two chocolate chip waffles. Smells like heaven. Also smells like the air as you walk past the Main Street Bakery in the Magic Kingdom.
Yummy.

Today I’m off to work on binding a small wall hanging and then getting dinner ready and kids where they need to be. Oh yes, and also to strum the ukulele.

You looked so thrilled! I am happy for you. I guess that means I should practice my hammered dulicimer. Time, I need more time or fewer interests.

Joe and I laughed and laughed…your method is so familiar! When I got Erika’s uke at Guitar Stop in Cambridge, they said the strings did not need to be changed. One string lost tune as I was buying it and the man just pulled on it to stretch it, tuned it and it was ok. My uke is a FLUKE, concert size, but I have been thinking about getting a small soprano. For a Valentine, we painted my old Harmony uke (it was really beaten up) for the youngest. We have a trombone, cornet, accordian in the attic. Piano, guitar, ukes and keyboards down. No drums, alas! You look great with red! If you enjoy singing, the Daily Ukulele has 365 songs. I like several uke websites on line. You are terrific and thanks for your enthusiasm!!
